R & R Engineering were employed by Kier Construction for the design and Manufacture of a £140k replacement footbridge at Sherlock Lane for client Merseytravel. The original bridge which spans over the Kingsway Tunnel approach road in Wallasey dated back to the 1970’s and needed to be replaced due to problems with vandalism and suicide attempts.
The replacement new tubular steel structure has a single span in excess of 24M and with the new curved containment design is a safe, modern solution as apposed to an oppressive cage containment system.
Good teamwork and rigorous site surveys and dimension checks were vital in ensuring the bridge lift on the 26th June 2011 went without a hitch. The following day the new bridge was opened to provide Merseytravel and the local residents an aesthetically pleasing, safe and modern footbridge.
